5 Ways to Add Fabulous Color to Your Home

Color can change your life! It adds a unique flavor to your home that is special to you and tells a story. You can instantly be transported to classic Palm Beach with pinks and greens, or you can channel the Hamptons with blue and white.

The best places to add color to your home are through custom applications of fabrics, such as pillows or window treatments, lighting fixtures, paint, or color splashes in upholstery.

Carefully Consider Your Color Preferences

The best colors for your home are the ones you gravitate towards. I often ask clients to tell me what’s in their closet and what fashion designers they like. Is their closet filled with flamingo print dresses (true story!) or soft textures of luscious camel tones and shades of neutrals? These answers tell me so much about a client's color instincts.

Here are 5 ways to take those color preferences and turn them into a beautiful and personalized home…

1. Adorn Your Home with Colorful Accessories

A great place to add splashes of color are accessories. This needs to be done in a very strategic way. Pillows and drapery panels are often the best way! For most smaller decorative accessories, keeping these all neutral provides a fresher look.

2. Update with a New Coat of Paint

A simple coat of paint in a new color can transform a room! I’m finding many clients are done with the deep taupe and dark grey colors. They are craving an all-over, refreshing crisp white to fill the walls in main spaces.

3. Elevate with an Elegant Area Rug

Area rugs are a fabulous place to incorporate color and even an intricate pattern. Because a rug is viewed on a different plane than the rest of furnishings, bold colors and patterns are easier to visually intake.

4. Transform Your Space with Wow-Worthy Window Treatments

Window treatments are a lovely place to showcase color and pattern. Custom panels are an investment, so I recommend going bold. Don't be afraid of that wild floral or chinoiserie pattern you love!

5. Uplift Your Home with Handsome Upholstery

A pair of chairs or a sofa in a pop of color can transform an otherwise neutral room to feel "colorful.”

So, How We Can Help?

In our design inspiration meetings, I ask clients their dislikes as much as their likes. Often many clients have a color they strongly dislike. For example, it might remind them of a rival sports team (another true story!), and that helps us know what colors to steer clear of!

What can seem like a very bold color choice in a presentation always turns out amazing in real life! My experience in the textile industry working at Lee Jofa and Brunschwig & Fils has made me fearless when strategically using color in interiors. Our goal at MWD is for our clients to Live Brightly!
