Having pets can be messy and unpredictable, but it’s also a joyful endeavor! Pets are part of the family, and at Mimi Wittstruck Design, we welcome designing pet-friendly homes. 

Today, we will be sharing 3 design tips for homeowners with pets. Take a look… 

Tip #1: Select Performance Fabrics Whenever Possible

For upholstered furniture, we always recommend performance fabrics such as Crypton. For upholstery that isn’t performance fabric, you can apply a stain guard spray after installation for added protection. 

Camouflage is also an option. For example, you can match fabric color to shedding pet fur so it will blend in as much as possible. Or you can choose small-scale prints to aid in camouflaging fur. Check out 3 Reasons Why Color and Patterns are Essential to Beautiful Interiors.

If you want to keep your doggies off the sofa, we can create custom pet beds in indoor-outdoor fabric to match the color scheme, so they will still have a comfortable place to hang out with their pack! 

Tip #2: Choose Durable Flooring

Selecting smart flooring is essential. Surfaces such as tiles are the easiest to clean. Hardwood floors are typically not recommended. Instead, try tile for a durable, water-resistant option. 

Paint your walls in an "eggshell" sheen to prevent scuffing in high-traffic areas since flat paint shows marks most easily.

Tip #3: Protect Your Floors with Rugs

We always recommend indoor/outdoor rugs or rugs made from polyester material to help withstand the wear and tear of pet activities. You can easily wipe down these rugs, and patterns can be most forgiving.

It is possible to combine beauty and practicality in households with pets! Selecting the right finishes and materials, such as fabrics and rugs, will go a long way to maintaining a lovely space to enjoy your family and furry friends!
